My companion and I walked out of the theatre after the show. “That was weird” she said, “I didn’t like it”.
“I really enjoyed it” I replied, “but yes that was weird” I then agreed.
The set, as you can see from the picture, is an exciting and intimate backdrop all decorated with maritime ornaments and lumps of dynamite. A ramshackle old house lived in by a ship’s captain and his family has taken on a visage of a ship. Captain Shotover and his clan drag their guests into their bohemian lifestyle that none seen able to resist. A bizarre type of free living and conversation settle son them all. Random characters pop up throughout, theft, gunfire and explosions all serve as a backdrop to the various conversations of these curious characters, all of whom seek love or emotional heartbreak of one sort or another.
It is rather hard to keep track of the intricate conversations but well worth the effort to try. Do not go if you are tired, this is play which requires focus to really absorb it, and even after that you’re entirely sure what’s going on. I found it engrossing but I admit it is not to everyone’s taste. However it is safe to say, no matter what you feel about it emotionally, you will undoubtedly find it weird.
