I was tremendously indignant during this show as a member of the cast tried to take the lady friend I brought along to the theatre. She took her phone, took selfies with her and professed love to her, insisting the two of them were made for each other and trying to get her (my girlfriend) to promise to text and call her. The cast member claimed it was to demonstrate love and the chemical endorphins one feels when you are in love, but I could clearly see it for what it was, a brazen attempt to steal my date. Quite outrageous stuff…
The show was very sweet. It was a musical and the whole performance was done buy a talented trio who played a couple of guitars and beat out rhythms on wooden crates. I particularly liked one of the first numbers about dopamine, and how and why it hits you. The simple, but lovely and very well-crafted music was very enjoyable; the cast also have lovely voices. I also gained a particular fondness for a turquoise guitar, played by the dastardly character who tried to steal my date. and I now quite fancy that instrument for myself.
The stories were very poignant, an examination of two different types of addiction: a gambling addiction, a sex addiction, and the trials of the counsellor trying to help people through their addictions. The perspectives were different each time. We saw the gambling compulsion from the point of view of the gambler, whilst the sex addict’s life was seen via his long-suffering wife, and then the counsellor trapped in the middle, shifting perspectives from one case to the next, never having time for herself. It was all rather moving. It helped there were also some very light-hearted moments which had us all chuckling. All in all, a thought-provoking, but also quite educational piece of drama. It made you think about the addictions that are so rarely in the spotlight, as well as the repercussions they have not just on the individual, but all the people around them. As the show pointed out, each of us meet at least 1000 people in our lifetime and each of them meet another 1000, so each of us is only one person removed from a million people and two people removed from 1 billion. It’s a sobering thought that actions can be so far reaching.
So even if this show does result in my date leaving me for another I can’t complain too much; the humour and delightful melodies were probably worth it. Maybe I can arrange a trade, her for that very attractive turquoise guitar…that could be a decent exchange.

The actor and my girlfriend in a selfie together. What cheek…although I suppose I can’t object too much, they do look very good together…
