Zazu Part II: A Fete Worse Than Death
Sadly I was unable to attend Zazu part II but my colleague Rob kindly wrote up his personal assessment of the show. D.K
Zazu is the only performance I have ever seen that gave me a quiche. And it was a nice quiche.
G’mu to all those who understand this reference!
Zazu Part II is the indirect sequel to Zazu Part I and is undoubtedly the funnier of the two. Admittedly, I did see Part I on the same night my girlfriend and I broke up so I was not in the mood for laughing at the time, but I still think the audience would agree with me.
In Part II we come to learn more and more about the fantastical land of Zazu whilst revisiting the same collection of characters, as well as being introduced to some new ones (that poor old woman). The sketches are fast paced and help to develop characters that by now we have awkwardly come to care for. There was no time wasted on introducing characters which allowed us to get straight to the funny stuff.
Perhaps unexpectedly, amongst all the apparent mania, it is actually possible to draw out some internal consistency from Zazu! Subtle call backs to the previous show reward past visitors, such as when we discover that singing is illegal which helps to explain the concert from Part I. And on top of all that we got an added helping of audience participation! This was my favourite part because a) I got a quiche and b) the man had a fringe.
Enough said. Zazu is truly a trilogy like no other and I look forward to seeing Zazu Part III. I have high expectations for more laughs and more hopefully more foodstuffs.
